And I've never, ever been called a Commie (or anything else) by an elected official. So thanks, @RepStickland, for giving me a hearty laugh.

But back to personal responsibility and parental rights. Note how
@RepStickland won't explain what he means by "parental rights." That's probably because any serious discussion would involve difficult questions of where parental rights end and the child's rights begin.2 replies 3 retweets 13 likesShow this thread -
Does
@RepStickland subscribe, for instance, to@RandPaul's view of parental rights in which the parents own the children? (No, he really said this: "The state doesn’t own the children. Parents own the children, and it is an issue of freedom.") 3/https://respectfulinsolence.com/2015/02/03/is-republican-party-becoming-antivaccine-party/ …1 reply 4 retweets 6 likesShow this thread -
Or does
@RepStickland think that children have rights as autonomous beings in the temporary care of their parents? I suspect he views children more as property or appendage, because FREEDOM. (Be really hasn't come across as very bright so far.) 4/1 reply 2 retweets 8 likesShow this thread -
Certainly
@RepStickland hasn't struck me as someone who thinks much or very deeply about anything. 5/1 reply 2 retweets 12 likesShow this thread -
In any event, when I say that the
@GOP had become the antivaccine party, Republican politicians like@RepStickland are one huge reason why. 6/6https://respectfulinsolence.com/2019/04/19/gop-has-become-antivaxer/ …2 replies 4 retweets 14 likesShow this thread -
It's strange how once antivaxx nonsense was the domain of fringe freaky hippie lefties, & Republicans looked at it and demanded that stupid was *their* brand, so they had to appropriate it.

It's because FREEDUMB. Basically antivaxers figured out the siren call to lure right wingers to their cause: FREEDOM, "parental rights," and portraying school vaccine mandates as government overreach and an unacceptable infringement of THEIR freedom and parental rights.

Then the appeals to FREEDUMB and parental rights served as the gateway for antivax conspiracy theories and pseudoscience to infiltrate the
@GOP base.1 reply 0 retweets 5 likes -
Most
@GOP politicians are not antivax, but antivax pseudoscience has increasingly infiltrated enough of the Republican base that many candidates and elected officials say feel the need to pander to the growing number of vocal and politically active right wing antivaxers.2 replies 0 retweets 11 likes
Unfortunately, the greatest success of antivaxers had been to frame their conspiracy theories as an assault on "freedom" and thereby co-opt the libertarian and Trump wings of @GOP.

And now we have clusters of kids getting diseases we haven't had an issue with in DECADES. Seems like common sense to us, but to them, THE MOUTHBREATHING MAGA CROWD, you may as well say you're taking a dump on jesus whilst taking away all their semi-automatic "hunting" rifles.
