Funny how antivaccine activists dismiss the possibility of death due to measles (~1 in 1,000) as being of little or no consequence; yet, a one in a million chance of severe reactions to a vaccine is completely unacceptable to them.

I agree in principle, but there is more nuance than that. Most of society is already immunized, so the risk of contracting measles is lower…so it isn’t 1 in 1000 chance of death by skipping the vaccine in every part of our country. Still unbalanced, just not as stark as that.

In game theory, you are describing defectors: they want YOUR kids to take the vaccine, and the risk of a one-in-a-million adverse reaction, so that THEIR kids will have the benefit of herd immunity without the risk of an adverse reaction.

Replying to @raganwald @arhoads76 and
I find that even more abhorrent than ignorantly believing vaccines don’t work: You’re describing people who deliberately spread lies in order to sow confusion while they try to piggy-back on the rest of society.

Indeed. Dr. Bob Sears even explicitly advocated "hiding in the herd" in his vaccine book.https://respectfulinsolence.com/2014/09/08/dr-bob-sears-profiled-a-cynical-vaccine-averse-pediatrician-who-accepts-no-blame-for-the-results-of-his-antivaccine-message/ …
