"I generally find criticism of alt med ideas too simple & not worth my time."
That's nice. Arrogant much?
Leave it to us plebian skeptics to deal with this sort of nonsense. Don't bother to sully yourself. No, really. Don't bother your pretty little head. We've got this.

He says that likely because 1. He doesn’t grasp the complex nature of the problem or 2. He doesn’t have the knowledge base to discuss these ideas or 3. He is intellectually lazy and ignorant of the fact that skills needed for criticism of alt med apply globally in medicine.

I mean, many view the alt med industry as one of the greatest current threats to public health, deserving MORE time and resources to combat, but whatever.

Yes (obviously I agree given how much time I spend on my blog hobby), but all too many doctors take the attitude that it's somehow not much of a threat and that dealing with it is somehow beneath them.

I agree. To ignore the harmful role that alt med plays in fostering distrust in public health and spreading misinformation is naive at best. Complicit at worst.

I remember back in 2006 when Vanderbilt opened their integrative medicine center. I was invited to be on some committee, until I gave a highly critical grand rounds and the invitation was rescinded.

Sadly, my cancer institute is planning on opening an integrative oncology center. The president of the cancer hospital was rather taken aback by my email to him outlining my objections and citing my
@NatureRevCancer Perspective article on the topic.2 replies 2 retweets 10 likes -

I don't know. Probably patient satisfaction. One of the things I like most about my cancer center is the relative paucity of anything resembling "integrative oncology" compared to other cancer centers. I've always known it was just a matter of time before woo arrived, though.

Alt med does have excellent patient satisfaction scores despite poorer outcomes...

How do we rebuild that trust and manage patient expectations with the current system? Especially when alt med is actively fostering that distrust.
