Even if they don’t hand you cash for your services, most of your patients are your customers. What are they giving you in exchange for a diagnosis, treatment, surgery, healthy baby, etc?

Ok so, I think ‘customer’ devalues the patient. We do have to provide patient ‘service’ which includes satisfaction and so on, but ‘patient’ is so much more. It invokes our oaths, our duty, our privilege in taking care of them. ‘Customer’ reduces them to a profit center.

“Customer” gives you, the doctor, a lot of power. You can say things like: - I’m sorry that’s not a service we provide here - I’m sure you could find someone who would do that for you but I won’t - There are other places to receive care in this town. You might try them.

I think you’ve hit the trifecta of gross, wrong and unprofessional.
