Marcus Welby, MD started a genre of quirky/rebellious/brilliant white male physicians who save the day with their virtuosity/insight/bedside manner. FIFTY YEARS LATER that genre has completely transformed and now ... {checks script} ...whoops! correction, nothing has changed:pic.twitter.com/LNBWan9j4g

Don't forget Dr. Kildare, a character created in that 1930s and then rapidly adapted to radio, movies, and TV, who started the genre. He might well be the earliest example of this genre, although there might be earlier examples that I'm not aware of.

Interestingly, Dr. Kildare and Dr. Gillespie (his mentor) formed a team. Kildare was the brilliant young surgeon willing to break the rules. Dr. Gillespie was much quirkier (and older) doctor, who both restrained and facilitated Kildare's bucking the system.

Amusingly, the series was also the first that I'm aware of to portray hospital administrators as money-grubbing and reputation-obsessed. This was shown using the character of Dr. Carew, who was obsequious to donors and always getting in Kildare's way, with Gillespie mocking him.

I had youthful crushes on Ben Gazarra and Richard Chamberlain, those handsome, humble, brilliant white coated tv doctors. My mother watched a soap opera that also had a full slate of saviour medicos.

Dr Kildare. Originally portrayed by Lew Ayers, with supporting cast including Lionel Barrymore as the terminally cranky Dr Leonard Gillespie. They did some stuff modern day medicos would turn green even thinking about. Like, treating a mental patient with "insulin shock !"
