I'm not at all fond of the term "pseudoscience police." It reminds me too much of "grammar police, "tone police," "PC police," etc. It has negative connotations and is just a step or two removed from "pseudoscience Nazis." 1/https://twitter.com/pedipsych/status/1114915201386782721 …

As for the article, it makes some reasonable points, and, of course, it's good to have one's efforts recognized. As for "tone," I differentiate between the scammers and the victims. 2/

For instance, when it comes to cancer quackery, I try very hard to be empathetic and respectful of patients who seek out quackery. However, when it comes to quacks like
@DrStanBurzynski, the quacks at Hallwang Clinic or@019Clinica, it's take no prisoners. 3/1 reply 0 retweets 5 likesShow this thread -
Ditto vaccines. I make a distinction between vaccine-averse parents, who should be treated respectfully and empathetically, and hard core antivaxers and leaders of the antivaccine movement, for whom it's also take no prisoners. 4/

Elswhere, I agree that it's important to know what our purpose is. Personally, I'm for taking licenses away from quacks and preventing quack specialties (e.g., naturopathy) from attaining state licensure status. 5/

I'm also OK with bringing public pressure on tech and social media companies like Facebook or YouTube to halt (or at least inhibit) the spread of pseudoscience like cancer quackery and antivaccine misinformation on their platforms. 6/

But lose the "pseudoscience police." I almost didn't bother to read the article because "pseudoscience police" struck me as dismissive and sarcastic. 7/7
