Thx for the #GoScience support! Agree we can't let pseudoscience & misinformation go unchecked. As you note, finding the right tone can be a challenge. Don't want to ridicule patients/public looking for answers. Way more wiggle room with those profiting from bunk!

I think your #netflix show strikes this balance pretty well with being direct but not demeaning. Ever do a show on cannabidiol? Can't think of another substance right now with such a high hype/science ratio.

Thx, thx! It is a tough balance. If we do a S3, CBD/cannabis my number 1 choice for new episode (did a piece on point recently: https://www.nbcnews.com/think/opinion/cbd-oil-products-promise-miracle-cures-does-science-support-hype-ncna984216 …). Interesting history, emerging research, great visuals.

I've referred to medical marijuana as the "new herbalism," because it is. Basically, advocates ascribe magical properties to marijuana.https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/medical-marijuana-as-the-new-herbalism-part-1-the-politics-of-weed-versus-science/ …

What's particularly infuriating to me is the whole subtype of cancer quackery that I like to call "cannabis cures cancer." No, it doesn't. At best, some cannabinoids have been shown to have modest, at best, antitumor activity in preclinical models.https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/medical-marijuana-as-the-new-herbalism-part-2-cannabis-does-not-cure-cancer/ …

Here's a typical "cannabis cures cancer" alternative cancer cure testimonial. As an epilogue, I recently learned that the patient discussed in this post died.https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/medical-marijuana-as-the-new-herbalism-part-3-a-cannabis-cures-cancer-testimonial/ …

Here's another "cannabis cures cancer" testimonial. If you look at it skeptically, knowing your cancer biology, you can easily tell that it did not, at least not in this case.https://respectfulinsolence.com/2017/04/03/did-cannabis-oil-save-deryn-blackwells-life/ …

Given the connection to the antivaccine movement, another particularly galling subtype of cannabis quackery is the "cannabis for autism" variety.https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/medical-marijuana-as-the-new-herbalism-part-4-cannabis-for-autism/ …

Again, there is no evidence; yet recently the state of Michigan added autism to the list of approved conditions for medical marijuana.

None of this is to say the the use of cannabis can't be science-based medicine. It can. The problem is the dichotomy between the hype (cannabis is great for everything) versus the tiny number of indications for which there is reasonable evidence.https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/medical-marijuana-as-the-new-herbalism-part-5-turning-herbalism-into-science-based-medicine/ …

The point is that cannabis doesn't merit any special treatment. For each potential indication, marijuana and cannabinoids isolated from it need to go through preclinical and clinical testing, just like any other drug.

But because its a schedule 1 drug, Feds ban any testing?

Then the obvious first step would be to pressure Congress to remove it from Schedule 1, not to give advocates a pass for any health claims they want to make.
