Makes it hard to share evergreen content. Time for your own site? I love that I’m the only one in control of my posts.

So do I, and it only costs me ~$80/month. I accept no advertising and no sponsored posts. It's just me and 100% total control. Total freedom,as long as I can afford it. OTOH, this approach inherently limits my reach.

Yeah. One of the values of writing for an outlet is that it expands reach, but also gives credence (sometimes) because of editorial review. My own columns I have full rights to after they first-run in
@CapTimes. (That was easy to negotiate because they don’t pay me a dime.

It can do the opposite with respect to credence as well. The disadvantage of writing for an outlet is that you can be tarred by other things being published by that outlet. I learned that during the whole "Pepsigate" kerfuffle at ScienceBlogs several years ago.

Yep, I agree. Choose your outlets carefully.

Over the years I was at ScienceBlogs, every so often I'd get an offer to blog or write columns somewhere else. I think it was because I was too comfortable there that I didn't pursue most of them.

I regret that now, to some extent because now that I'm free and clear I don't get offers for worrying or blogging gigs any more. It's as though I blew my opportunity.

I used to think my lack of offers was because I was too...insolent. But then I saw Jen Gunter get a column in the NYT, and these days she's at least as blunt as I always was. She also cusses, something I rarely do on my blog or on Twitter, other than the occasion "bullshit."

So I'm left to conclude that my "Insolence" is probably more of a niche taste, without broad appeal. Maybe I need to figure out how to change that.

Let me know if you want to pitch somewhere where I may know an editor!

Thanks. The thing is, I know a few (very few) editors too. If I were to decide to go this route I'd have to do a lot more thinking.

Editors also mystify me sometimes. I can’t fathom why some things get turned down, but enthusiastically picked up by others. My editor at
@CapTimes has been delightful. I actually approached them about a regular column because of how encouraging she had been in the past.0 replies 0 retweets 0 likesThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
