The Pseudoscience Police. My latest blog post on @PsychToday . Hoping to hear from some of the science defenders about the questions raised in the article. @CaulfieldTim @DrJenGunter @joeschwarcz @gorskonhttps://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/abcs-child-psychiatry/201904/the-new-pseudoscience-police-coming-screen-near-you …

Well, for one thing, I definitely don't like being called the "pseudoscience police." The very name comes across as dismissive of what we do, and the title immediately grated on me, regardless of the merit of the content of the post, as it sounded sarcastic.

Certainly not my intent as I think this work is crucial, as I say in the post. In fact, I like to consider myself part of this group.

Then may I suggest that you find a better term? I like to use "science advocate," but I'm open to other suggestions. "Science police" reminds me of grammar, tone, etc. police. It caused a visceral negative reaction in me when I read the title. Quacks call us this sort of thing.

Indeed, "science police" is a mere step or two removed from "science Nazi" as far as derogatory terms go, in my book.

Names matter. They affect how people perceive the content.

After all, if names don't matter, why do antivaxers get so worked up when they are called antivaccine? Why do they so strenuously insist that they are "not antivaccine" and try to portray themselves as vaccine safety advocates? It's because names matter.

I do like "science advocate" or supporters of a science-based approach as this highlights that we aren't (necessarily) against particular approaches. Show us the science. This piece has a nice emphasis on the value of pushing back against the bunk...
