And that doesn't even take the risk of shingles into account after the children grow up.

Anti-vaxxers say chickenpox reduces the risk of shingles more than the vaccine but I'm losing track of the no's of my relatives in the UK and Ireland (where they don't vaccinate for CP) who've gotten shingles.

Let's see. In the last 2 years: my mom, my uncle, my other uncle, first uncle's wife, my cousin's son (who's only about 10) - all in Ireland, and my sister-in-law (in the UK). And those are only the ones I've heard about, all the way here in Canada.

My cousin died of chicken pox related encephalopathy at 4 years old. Want to tell my aunt Kathleen how safe chicken pox is?

I've seen a lot of people saying the chickenpox vaccine doesn't protect you against shingles, which was not my understanding. What's the truth? Does it lower your chance? I'm pissed I have to wait til I'm 50 to get the shingles vaccine :(
-
You can't get shingles if you don't get the chicken pox. Shingles is due to reactivation of dormant virus in the nerve roots.

Meanwhile I got the vaccine when I was 6 (when it first came out) and gained immunity. I had no traumatic experience, no memory of it at all. Seems just about ideal to me. But anti-vaxers refuse to get that and would instead have their children suffer to be "safe."

Thank you for your efforts to educate people about the dangers pseudoscience, Dr. Gorski. How do you balance the notion of providing guidance, education, and reason w/ notion that sharing opinions of the uninformed (or worse) could serve to entrench the credulous even further?

I wish we had the vaccine when I was a kid. I remember pox “parties” and having chickenpox, it was not pleasant nor a party.

Leeches and laudanum. Urethral scraping and mercury to cure STDs. Trepanation for depression and schizophrenia. These folks ideas of medical tech "regression" over the past 100-200 years is fascinating. Dumbasses, the lot.
