I kid you not, I once dated a Reiki Master who told me his sperm was “SUPER SIZED” and would impregnate me.😆 He followed it up by saying that they would “break through my cervical hole”. 🙄 I didn’t continue to date him.🤦🏼‍♀️

I was once out with a guy, seemed nice, and then all of a sudden his “keto side” kicked in and he proceeded to wax evangelically how there was no cancer before we ate wheat. My vagina literally went into spasm. A bad spasm. Not the fun kind. As in, nope, nope, nopity, nope.

Dating sites need to allow people to check boxes on beliefs, like Reiki, acupuncture, keto, anti vax, marijuana cures cancer. People should be with people who get them. Also, a filter to catch photos more than 3 years old would be nice.

There is no good evidence that #acupuncture is anything more than an elaborate placebo effect. Just because medical schools and integrative medicine centres teach it does not mean it works. https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/reference/acupuncture/ … @ScienceBasedMed

Saying it’s a placebo isn’t exactly the same as saying it doesn’t work. What do you think of studies that show placebo can be effective for symptom management, for like pain or fatigue? https://www.health.harvard.edu/mental-health/the-power-of-the-placebo-effect …

If when acupuncture works it is due to the placebo effect, does that mean when acupuncture doesn’t work it is because of the nocebo effect? Asking for a friend.

I’m asking because I’ve been reading about placebo and it’s effect on pain. But I’m not a scientist, so I’m interested in Ken’s thoughts. Just bc it’s taught in IM doesn’t mean it works. But also, Just bc it’s placebo doesn’t mean it has no value.

Thanks for asking. I do not claim placebo has no clinical effect. As a physician, there is a debate on whether it is ethical to deceive a patient by using a placebo. It could interfere with the therapeutic alliance among other problems. @gorskon - thoughts?

Actually, I'm more of the mind that placebo effects are more artifacts of the clinical trial process more than anything else.

Placebo effects are short term. So there is also that.

So are most methods of symptom relief for pain. I put acupuncture in the same bucket as meditation (maybe because the real benefit of acupuncture is lying quietly in a dark room for 30 minutes with no distractions).

I really feel like this point is the least understood in recent placebo conversations.
