Dr. Orient is very silly. She's also doing what @AAPSonline does when it comes to vaccines and disguising its support of antivaccine pseudoscience. However, I thank her for once again giving me the opportunity to remind people how antivax AAPS is. 1/https://twitter.com/jorient/status/1106535917613793286 …

A good example of this occurred when Tom Price was nominated for
@HHSGov secretary after@realDonaldTrump was elected. 7/https://respectfulinsolence.com/2016/11/30/the-new-secretary-of-health-and-human-services-is-a-member-of-a-fringe-medical-organization-heres-what-that-means/ …Show this thread -
Coincident, around that very time
@AAPSonline published a heaping pile of
of a study flailing pushing a favorite antivaccine trope, "too many too soon." 8/https://respectfulinsolence.com/2016/12/22/the-crank-medical-organization-to-which-hhs-nominee-dr-tom-price-belongs-lays-down-a-heaping-helping-of-antivaccine-pseudoscience/ …Show this thread -
More recently,
@AAPSonline published a horrible paper by biochemical engineer turned incompetent epidemiologist Brian Hooker. It was a breathtakingly awful "reanalysis" of an MMR safety study. 9/https://respectfulinsolence.com/2018/12/12/brian-hookers-antivaccine-pseudoscience-has-risen-from-the-dead-to-threaten-children-again/ …Show this thread -
Basically, this "reanalysis" tried to cichlids that the original authors of the study had hidden a correlation between MMR and autism in African-American boys. 10/

Hooker’s incompetent reanalysis, along with Wiiliam Thompson’s claims were literally the basis of the antivaccine conspiracy theory
#CDCwhistleblower that blew up in 2014. 11/https://respectfulinsolence.com/2015/08/25/kevin-barry-you-magnificent-bastard-i-read-your-antivaccine-book/ …Show this thread -
The
#CDCwhistleblower conspiracy theory was also the basis of the anti-vaccine propaganda movie disguised as a documentary by@DrWakefield and@delbigtree,@vaxxedthemovie. Yet@AAPSonline published the incompetent reanalysis that helped launch it. 12/https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/andrew-wakefields-vaxxed-antivaccine-propaganda-at-its-most-pernicious/ …Show this thread -
That's not all the pseudoscience that
@AAPSonline backs. For instance, it's published a risibly bad study linking abortion to breast cancer. (Hint: Abortion does not detectably increase the ridiculous of breast cancer.) 13/https://respectfulinsolence.com/2007/10/25/abortion-and-breast-cancer-the-chicago-t/ …Show this thread -
Of course, none of this is surprising, given that Dr. Orient rejects the very concept of a scientific consensus, thus revealing that she doesn't understand the very of nature of science. It is a very silly talking point beloved of cranks. 14/https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/hostility-towards-scientific-consensus-a-red-flag-identifying-a-crank-or-quack/ …

Not surprisingly, Dr. Orient is also a climate science denier. 15/

So, given all that background, it isn't surprising that Dr. Orient falls into the "vaccine freedom" camp, in which antivaccine pseudoscience is disguised as "choice" or "freedom." 16/

This brings me back to a variation of my rule of thumb. The use of words like "choice," "freedom," "consent" (especially "informed consent") by someone opposing school vaccine mandates is a red flag for antivaccine views. It fits Dr. Orient. 17/17
