Sadly, this is nothing new. Long is the list of skeptics who have been silenced by harassment. Much longer still is the list of skeptics who have suffered harassment at the hands of quacks, antivaxers, anti-GMO cranks, and other conspiracy theorists. 1/https://twitter.com/crackedscience/status/1103641951650439173 …

Harassing a Skeptic Into Silence. We have to talk about @thepharmafist (AKA @lepharmachien) and the consequences of mobs attacking important voices in the public sphere. https://jonathanjarry.com/2019/03/07/harassing-a-skeptic-into-silence/ … #skeptic #scicomm

That's because harassment of critics, particularly if they're women or poc, is a feature, not a bug, of how they deal with criticism. The intent is to silence or punish. 2/

For instance, Mike Adams has posted at least 40 posts attacking me, trying to link me with all manner of medical miscreants, claiming I have undisclosed conflicts of interest, and even accusing me of federal crimes. 3/

I myself have been at the receiving end many times. Most recently I was named as a co-defendant in a libel lawsuit, along with several editors of @ScienceBasedMed. 4/https://westfaironline.com/108686/mount-kisco-lyme-disease-doctor-sues-blogger-for-1m-citing-libel/ …

It's a real problem. If you speak out, you risk harassment and even legal action. 5/5

Forgot three things. First if you write pseudonymously and are effective, they WILL try to dox you and will almost always eventually succeed. 5a/5

Second, they WILL try to harass you at work by complaining to your boss. If you're in academia, as I am, that's usually just a nuisance given the ethos of academic freedom at universities, but if you work for a private company you could face pressure to shut up or b e fired. 5b/5

Finally, if you work for a state university or the federal government, you risk harassment by FOIA. They'll try to get your emails, your salary info, etc., basically anything subject to FOIA. I know several skeptics who've suffered this. 5c/5
