I recall one story of a man who had a perforated bowel who wanted to know what alternative there was to surgery. The reply from his doctor was along the lines of "what color coffin do you want?" followed by graphic details of death by sepsis.

You're not a cancer surgeon. My goal with these patients is to persuade them at least to let me operate on them. Surgery alone can cure breast cancer. Chemotherapy, radiation, and endocrine therapy decrease the chance of recurrence.
