I grew up in the 1970s in Michigan, and was at

I have a picture from Old Orchard Beach, ME ca 1950, where a family member is sharing a watermelon slice with an individual in blackface.

I think maybe you were in sheltered circles? I certainly knew people in both Ohio and New Jersey who'd do that.
-
Possibly, but I spent my teen years in a Detroit suburb that is now MAGA country. I saw plenty of racism there growing up. I was sensitive to it because I'd spent the first 10+ years of my childhood growing up in northwest Detroit and was a bit more sensitive to it.

Neither did I. N-bombs, yes. Nasty bigoted comments, yes. But blackface...?

Exactly. I’m 46 years old and I knew a lot of racist kids (and adults) growing up... didn’t even know it was a thing until recently.

I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and never heard of this happening in my circles, either.

I grew up in Maryland, college from 72-76, and I never heard about anyone doing blackface. If it happened, it was perhaps hidden. But, it's all so ridiculous--I just don't get it at all.
