When I was in medical school and residency in the 1980s and early 1990s HIV/AIDS was a death sentence. Within a dozen years or so after the identification of HIV in 1984, the disease went from incurable to chronically manageable. I watched patients die of AIDS in hospital wards in the 1990s. Now I treat benign conditions in people with HIV who are living their lives fully. IMHO this is the absolutely the most incredible public health achievement of my lifetime https://twitter.com/CharlesFLehman/status/1091757193450397698 …

Think of it this way. Within two decades of the first reports of the first cases of a mysterious and fatal immunodeficiency among gay men in the late 1970s, science-based medicine identified the causative virus and developed treatments that converted the disease to a chronic one.

So glad to be in med school when such treatment modalities are available for us to learn. Blessed that medical science is moving at this pace and wish it continues to grow and eliminate such deadly conditions.

I was treating people with “GRID” as a 1st year resident, before we even knew the cause — “treating” meant watching them die of pneumocystis or Kaposi’s sarcoma. I’m unaware of a single case in which homeopathy or “naturopathic medicine” prolonged the life of an HIV patient.
