Uh what? That's some fucked up logic. Yes; what is and isn't the leading cause of death depends on how we categorize and divide deaths, but where did you come up with the 50% figure?

Yes exactly. And do people not die outside of hospitals?

admittedly i did not spend any time reviewing this https://www.bmj.com/content/353/bmj.i2139 … before i stuck it in the story. realize this is a hugely gray and complex area, but --- suggestions on a more authoritative number/source?

How do you figure that up to 50% of hospital deaths would have to be due to medical error for the overall to be the third leading cause?
-
2.7 million deaths in America/year. 750.000 of them inside hospitals. Number in Johns Hopkins study: 250.000 - 400.000 deaths due to medical errors. (250k|400k)/750k And bob's your uncle. I'm not even American and I laugh at that study's analysis.

The Johns Hopkins study is nonsense ? It says they "extrapolated" total deaths from medical error. CDC figures say 160k from unintentional injuries, which would include deaths due to medical error.
-
I should note that my question about the Johns Hopkins study was more of a rhetorical one.

I'd wager a bet that there are a lot of deaths due to a lack of access to medicine though. Do we even look into that?
