      My concern is that because parents/teachers today are coddling children/students, what used to be considered normal anxiety may now be labeled as something much more, thereby robbing a great many people of the opportunity to work through normal anxiety and grow stronger for it.

          Shermer is implicitly attacking trained professionals. As a professor of some dozen plus years, I never questioned the professional judgment of requests from the office of disability. These requests never came from students. Always through the office.

          I suspect you're right. My wife was a school psychologist before she became a mental health pediatric NP, and she used to tell me of her travails getting reasonable accommodations for children with anxiety disorders.
