I just spoke for 45 minutes with Nathan Phillips, the Native American leader harassed in D.C. He lives in Michigan. Phillips said there was a "mob mentality" that was "scary." New detail he told me: Before incident seen on video, the students were harassing a group of blacks.

Native American leader Nathan Phillips told Free Press about being harassed in Washington DC in incident seen on video: "I'm a Marine Corps veteran and I know what that mob mentality can be like. ... It was ugly...the looks in these young men's faces. ... hatred in their faces."

Nathan Phillips told me he moved to Michigan 10 years ago after his wife was diagnosed with cancer and they were getting treatments from a university's cancer research center. Born in Nebraska, he was put into foster care as a kid and later joined the Marines.

"If their own instructors, their own teachers, their own chaperones, would have handled the situation right from the beginning, it would never have happened," Nathan Phillips told the Detroit Free Press. "I would have never been bothered with it."

Full story: Native American leader in metro Detroit: I saw 'mob mentality' in students. The Detroit Free Press spoke for 45 minutes with Nathan Phillips, the Michigan man seen in video with Kentucky students mocking him in Washington D.C.https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/2019/01/20/native-american-leader-nathan-phillips-recounts-incident-video/2630256002/ …

What's depressing is that right wingers are using the observation that the confrontation started between the #CovCath students and the African-American group to claim that Nathan Phillips is a liar and the #MAGA hat kids did nothing wrong.

The entire incident is troubling on so many levels.

It was being reported that the kids "swarmed" the native Americans and "taunted" them while they were "peacefully" protesting. When the actual story was: a group of kids were waiting for a bus, while a group of native Americans embedded themselves within the group of kids.
