I was rather puzzled by this and so rewatched the @Gillette ad. Nowhere does it say anything pro or con about repressing or expressing emotions. Rather, it suggests that men should suppress *behaviors* that harm others, which is just basic human decency and not being an asshole.https://twitter.com/michaelshermer/status/1085973889363001344 …

The liberal/APA/Gillette view of masculinity has it precisely backward: repressing emotions is not always bad, and expressing them is not always good. @sapinker explains it perfectly. Masculine virtues should be accentuated, masculine vices attenuated. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/17/opinion/apa-guidelines-men-boys.html … pic.twitter.com/xtbKF42Z4S

The insinuation is that being an asshole is the male default mode. I beg to differ.

Perhaps the fact that you interpreted it that way says more about you than the advertisement itself? It never occurred to me to get offended, it seemed like obvious stuff, pretty refreshing compared to most advertisements we get like 'Buy mah beer, get laid' and such

Yep. I didn't take it as aimed at me, because I don't harass women or assault women or unleash my anger in violent ways. Men who interpret the ad as targeting them seem to be saying that they do those things (or at least don't think those things are that bad).

Gillette's ultimate goal is selling razors. Any man past puberty could rightfully feel addressed by this ad me thinks.

It takes a special sort of snowflake to be UPSET. It's a commercial, in lots of them men can't tie their shoelaces or cook. It's a telling hill to die on. If one feels addressed and isn't upset and improves then that's how a boy becomes a man. It's a Rorschach test.
