Hey sure, I’ll join the pile-on as I read Gladwell’s big pot story (https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/01/14/is-marijuana-as-safe-as-we-think …). I’m two paragraphs in and I already went to the report he’s citing and found some bullshit. Here’s what he writes versus one thing the report says:pic.twitter.com/D2DvwKZi9H

Yes, he’s right that they say INHALED cannabis has limited data on this. But oral cannabinoids have an abundance of evidence, and they do in fact help a lot of people with nausea and vomiting. You have to say both things. Gladwell only said one of them, and sort of hid the other.

Actually, the evidence for anti-nausea activity for cannabinoids, oral or other route, is rather weak.

From the same National Academies of Science report that Gladwell cited in his piece: "There is conclusive evidence that oral cannabinoids are effective antiemetics in the treatment of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting."

Let's just say that as a cancer surgeon I'm less impressed with the evidence for cannabinoids for chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. At best, they're not better than existing anti-emetics. and have the problematic added side effects of drowsiness and cognitive impairment.

"...t is unclear whether the addition of cannabinoids to standard antiemetic regimes benefits patients with chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting. Cannabinoids probably increase adverse effects substantively."https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29286355

Even enthusiastic authors admit, "There is no good quality evidence to recommend or not the use of cannabinoids for CINV. More studies are still needed to evaluate the effectiveness of cannabinoids when compared with modern antiemetics."https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29168289
