Here's @stevennovella's year end look at @ScienceBasedMed. Key points: 1. We've started a Patreon so that we don't rely on services that serve up quack ads. 2. Steve's lawsuit is won and his attempt to recover court costs winding continuing. 1/https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/sbm-in-2018-and-beyond/ …

      3. Unfortunately, several of the editors of @ScienceBasedMed (Steve, Jann, Harriet, and myself included) were recently named in a new libel suit, this time by a "Lyme/literate" doctor. 2/https://westfaironline.com/108686/mount-kisco-lyme-disease-doctor-sues-blogger-for-1m-citing-libel/ …

      4. In 2019 we're going to combine SBM and the Society for SBM, in order to revitalize our efforts. 5. We've been getting guest submissions, some really good. However we really need new regulars. I've long wanted to post 7 days a week, but right now we have trouble with 5. 3/

Now some thoughts as managing editor of @ScienceBasedMed. 4/

Regarding our need for new regulars, there are several health areas where we've long been weak. We could really use experts and specialists in (but not limited to) these areas: mental health, OB/GYN and women's health, epidemiology, public health, cardiovascular disease. 5/

Other areas: surgical subspecialties, immunology, basic biomedical sciences. None of this means we won't consider talented bloggers who "grok" @ScienceBasedMed in specialities we already have covered, but we prioritize filling holes in our medical coverage portfolio. 6/

After all, it's been a 18 mos. and we still don't have a replacement for Mark. It's really hard to find good writers who also: 1. Understand and passionately support SBM 2. Can be relied on to contribute regularly on schedule. 7/

Most good bloggers about SBM usually have their own blog and are reluctant to give their best material to any but their own blog. Some even have their own regular or semi-regular gigs with mainstream publications. 8/

I also apologize for times when our determination regarding whether a guest submission is suitable for SBM takes too long. Those of us evaluating them have demanding jobs. For example, around NIH grant deadline times, my processing of guest submissions grinds to a halt. 9/

Also, although those of you out there who are also editors know, the amount of utter crap people send us is incredible. It's painfully obvious that most have never read our blog and therefore think we publish cutesy medical listicles or general medicine informational posts. 10/

All of that crap has to be waded through to find the uncommon gem that we really want to publish. It doesn't take much time per submission to identify the crap, but cumulatively it adds up. 11/

Sometimes we even get alternative medicine believers submitting articles touting acupuncture, chiropractic, or even reiki. These are always good for a chuckle and a sarcastic response with a link to our submission guidelines. 12/https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/about-science-based-medicine/submission-guidelines/ …

I also thank our copy editors/proofreaders, past and especially present, for fixing typos and helping get guest posts ready to publish. We certainly challenge them with our messed up typing. 14/

In 2019, my goals are: 1. To be faster and more reliable evaluating and publishing guest posts and to try not to leave bloggers hanging as long. 2. To find enough additional regulars to be able to post seven days a week. 3. To fill as many gaps in our expertise as I can. 15/

As always, the goals of @ScienceBasedMed remain unchanged: 1. To champion science as the basis for producing the most effective and safe medical care 2. To combat the infiltration of pseudoscience and quackery into medicine and public health policy. 3. To educate. 16/16
