is there any lazier and insufferable form of protest than judging classic TV, film, or books thru the self-righteous prism of 2018 'wokeness'? Seriously, take your Animal House and Birth of a Nation op-ed's and crawl back into your safe spacehttps://twitter.com/HuffPost/status/1067972666622189568 …

It’s such a bad take I’m thinking maybe...a joke? Has to be? Everyone knew birth of a nation was racist, even in 1915. The NAACP in 1915 staged massive protests against it

Birth of a Nation is technically brilliant and unabashedly racist and now plays like a documentary that can explain how cinema can be used as propaganda. Film schools used to screen and discuss it for this very reason, though most have stopped for fear of someone writing a blog

I feel like teaching it’s historical importance or technical importance is valid but that is not the same thing as honoring it. Same way you don’t need confederate memorials to learn or teach about the confederacy.

This is correct. It's weird that it isn't obvious.

You started out by saying no one should write op-eds about any classic movies including Birth of a Nation. I took it to suggest that anyone critical of BoaN should crawl back to their safe space.

That's not the argument Oswalt is making. His objection is to pieces that advocate or imply prohibiting screenings of BoaN as an object used to glorify white supremacy, as if it serves the same function in 2018 as Confederate monuments or the confederate battle flag.
