Ugh: "Hospital, @UofT examine possible uses of alternative medicines" https://www.toronto.com/news-story/5345024-hospital-u-of-t-examine-possible-uses-of-alternative-medicines/ … @SRHHospital @carlyweeks @sharon_kirkey @CBCHealth @DrPChouinard @gorskon via @ryarmst
Nothing irritates me more than academic centres legitimizing questionable alternative practices!

Evidence for acupuncture much weaker than often believed, see: http://policyoptions.irpp.org/magazines/november-2017/acupuncture-and-the-placebo-problem/ … Indeed, it stands as an example of the legitimization problem. And use for addiction? See https://aim.bmj.com/content/early/2018/07/20/acupmed-2016-011283 … No diff btw "real" and sham acupuncture. The larger, more rigorous, and better controlled the acupuncture study, the less of an effect it shows and the more likely it is to show no effect. This is most consistent with an intervention that has no specific effect beyond maybe placebo.

I did see this meta-analysis a while back, which used 20k individual patients' data from 39 trials. I'm skeptical, tho I haven't looked in closely / critically at the analysis yet. Has anyone?https://www.jpain.org/article/S1526-5900(17)30780-0/abstract?platform=hootsuite …

It's an update of a 2012 meta-analysis that everyone touted. I haven't looked at the update; but given the methodological issues with the first meta-analysis I doubt it's anything new. https://respectfulinsolence.com/2012/09/12/can-we-finally-just-say-that-acupuncture-is-nothing-more-than-an-elaborate-placebo-can-we-2012-edition/ …

I also note that @stevennovella and @MarkCrislip also took a look at the original 2012 meta-analysis. Just search for "Vickers" over at @ScienceBasedMed.
