Totally agree with

Authorship standards are defined by role, not status. See http://www.icmje.org The corresponding author is often the senior author when a student or trainee is the first author.

Or contributed the most original thought too, right? Lab techs do a lot of work for papers too but sometimes contribute no original thinking....like at all.....ijs

Perhaps in the US, but in the UK and Australia a student is never a first author, ditto a junior doctor - it will always be an academic supervisor or consultant who takes first billing.

What about program directors who want their names as senior authors in everything written by any residents or fellows regardless of whether PD contributed any original thought or work? I say this as someone who is used to the rules of basic science not clinical research...
