I see reaction to this column (based on my new book) divided between liberals saying “Duh, what took you so long” and conservatives saying “When did you go off your meds.” A sign of our widening partisan divide: what liberals think is obvious most conservatives don’t see at all.https://twitter.com/MaxBoot/status/1049451517907005440 …

Have you ever listened to Sean Hannity's radio show? For 10 years (at least) he has indoctrinated flyover country with horrible racist and bigoted diatribes. This then bled over into our congress with the rise of the tea party. It was in plain sight.

It's more than 20 years. Back in the late 1990s/early 2000s I was still a conservative. When I was in my office or lab in the afternoon, I'd always listen to Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity on WABC. (I was in NJ then.) They were plenty extreme then, although they are worse now.

I agree 100%. They just got demonstrably worse (rabid) after Obama was elected. I don't think that was an accident! Not sure how anyone could have missed that. I am glad Max has come into the light but I struggle with how anyone could have missed it unless by choice.

During the 2016 election, I used to ask Trump supporters on Twitter: "If Trump is going to #MAGA, could you tell me when, exactly, America ceased to be great?" Almost invariably, it would boil down to 2008, although some were smart enough to dance around a direct answer.
