I bet @bridget_md didn't mention how TCM as we know it today really originated in the 1940s and 1950s under Chairman Mao and how acupuncture as we know it isn't even 100 years old. 1/https://twitter.com/DianeRadfordMD/status/1046790244945858562 …

David Gorski, MD, PhD added,
Basically, because he didn't have enough real doctors to meet the medical needs of his people, Mao recruited Chinese folk healers. He had his medical authorities retcon the history of TCM into a cohesive whole. 2/
Indeed, one could even say that Mao invented "integrative medicine" because he set the goal of "integrating" TCM and "Western" medicine. 3/https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/retconning-traditional-chinese-medicine/ …
Acupuncture isn't really ancient either. Before the 20th century, it was basically an Asian version of bloodletting with overtones of astrology. 4/https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/astrology-with-needles/ …
In essence, acupuncture evolved from ancient bloodletting practices. 5/https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/acupuncture-and-modern-bloodletting/ …
Indeed, even as recently as the early 20th century, acupuncture was brutal. So were other TCM treatments. 6/https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/the-reality-of-ancient-wisdom-acupuncture-and-tcm-werent-so-great/ …
Also, the thin filiform needles used in acupuncture today were actually not developed until the 1930s. Prior acupuncture needles were much larger and more like lancets. 7/https://respectfulinsolence.com/2018/09/04/what-department-of-family-medicine-university-of-michigan-teaches-acupuncture/ …
Also, let's not forget that the Chinese government is spending big to promote the sale of TCM, both at home and abroad. 8/
Less than two years ago, the Chinese government also passed a law to require all state hospitals to have a TCM program an putting TCM and "Western medicine" on "equal footing." 9/https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/traditional-chinese-medicine-gets-a-boost/ …
It's gotten so ridiculous that @WHO is on the verge of adding TCM to the new ICD-11 codes, largely due to the political clot of China. 10/https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/icd-11-a-triumph-of-the-integration-of-quackery-with-real-medicine/ …
Finally, I bet that @bridget_md didn't explain how TCM is prescientific vitalistic mysticism that had a lot more in common with ancient European ideas about balancing the four humors than with actual medicine. 11/11https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/what-is-traditional-chinese-medicine/ …
