I've especially noticed this phenomenon since I got a 4K HDR TV. For instance, "Luke Cage" has a lot of this issue. So do a lot of other 4K shows I've seen. Fiddling with the TV settings only marginally helps.

I've noticed a "darkness" filter is often used, and it messes with my eyes quite badly. Hard to see. Aside from that, I find the way it unaturally changes the hue structure and contrast levels of the frame inconsistently with the brightness levels.

...to be very distracting.

I always thought it was to imply that it was late at night. To further imply that the work these characters do is too important to allow them to go home at a reasonable hour.

As well as have the background noise or music very loud and soft dialogue very low.

I understand your frustration daredevil, and mr robot did this too. Pain in the neck felt like I was straining my eyes. I also hate those shaky camera movements during action scenes.

Because modern digital cameras can dance happily around the toe of the curve. If it doesn't read, it means your monitor isn't set correctly. Watch "Better Call Saul" to see how it's done perfectly. When that show looks right, you're set.

No amount of fiddling with the TV settings made the night scenes in the first episode of season 2 of
@OutcastCinemax watchable, and I have a 2 month old, fairly high end 55" 4K TV. I've found the same for other shows.@LukeCage, for instance. - Show replies
