I was just about to link to that. It’s been awhile so I skimmed it and see his chances with immediate interventions weren’t as good as I remembered. Still, he had zero chance the route he took.

Not necessarily true. His tumor was of a sufficiently indolent variety that, had he not already likely been metastatic at the time of diagnosis, nine months might or might not have made a difference.
