It's only going to get worse. Texas, in particular, looks to be at risk, thanks to the co-opting of right wing small government anti-regulation politics and successfully portraying their antivaccine views as "parental rights" and "vaccine choice." https://twitter.com/SethMacFarlane/status/1030546823734120448 …

The exemptions are in the most populated cities which tend to be our only *Democrat* strongholds, and the rates of exemption are roughly the same as Detroit. Totally agree on the anti-regulation politics: we've deregulated everything here.pic.twitter.com/vCC3R1edRz

Actually, it's nearly 100% correlated. Counties that voted for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election are the counties with the highest rates of vaccine exemption. Not sure if that's a spurious correlation a third variable around city living, but it is pretty distinctive.pic.twitter.com/yLH00okHQw

It is not, however, Clinton supporters, who have been actively working to weaken or eliminate school vaccine mandates in Texas, which is what will matter most. It's all Republicans, backed by big money donors. THAT was what I was talking about.https://respectfulinsolence.com/2017/02/22/in-the-age-of-donald-trump-vaccine-policy-is-becoming-politicized-with-potentially-deadly-consequences/ …

Basically, the antivax movement in Texas has recruited Republican lawmakers to stymie every attempt to tighten up school vaccine requirements any support every attempt to weaken them.https://respectfulinsolence.com/2017/07/07/vaccine-policy-is-becoming-politicized/ …

Also, Austin is probably anomalous, it's rate of vaccine exemptions driven by the presence of Waldorf schools and Andrew Wakefield living there.https://respectfulinsolence.com/2016/12/02/when-the-next-big-outbreaks-happen-theyll-probably-happen-in-texas/ …

As for Michigan, Warren is a hornet of vaccine exemptions, and it's Trump country, even though it's one of the biggest cities in Michigan, while Oakland and Macomb counties are affluent sunburns and exurbs.https://respectfulinsolence.com/2018/06/15/where-antivaxers-will-make-measles-great-again/ …
