Certainly Andrew Wakefield, father of the modern antivaccine movement, was not a "progressive." Let's not forget Dan Burton, who spent the 1990s and early 2000s holding bogus congressional hearings on "vaccine safety." 2/https://respectfulinsolence.com/2012/11/23/representative-dan-burtons-last-antivaccine-hurrah-is-scheduled-for-november-29/ …

The myth that antivaccine views are somehow unique to the "left" is so pervasive that even
@TheDailyShow got it wrong a few years ago. 3/https://respectfulinsolence.com/2014/06/04/the-daily-show-hilarious-segment-about-vaccines-not-so-hilariously-wrong-about-the-politics-of-vaccine-denialism/ …Show this thread -
Yes, it's true that
@billmaher and@RobertKennedyJr are progressives who are antivaccine. No one's arguing that. But they didn't start the antivaccine movement. Antivaccine activism long predates them. There's no evidence antivax is primarily left wing. 4/https://respectfulinsolence.com/2011/05/09/motivated-reasoning-and-the-anti-vaccine/ …Show this thread -
What
@alexberezow and@ACSHorg find so uncomfortable is that, TODAY, in 2018, the loudest and most dangerous voices from the antivaccine movement are inarguably coming from the right, such as from@RandPaul. 5/https://respectfulinsolence.com/2015/02/03/is-republican-party-becoming-antivaccine-party/ …Show this thread -
In Texas, antivaxers have weaponized the message of "freedom" and opposition to government regulation and thus brought in right wing activist groups to lobby against vaccine mandates. 6/https://respectfulinsolence.com/2017/02/22/in-the-age-of-donald-trump-vaccine-policy-is-becoming-politicized-with-potentially-deadly-consequences/ …

Just. three weeks ago,
@NVICLoeDown wrote a 4th of July antivaccine message ranting about "freedom" and how vaccine mandates are an unacceptable assault on liberty. 7/https://respectfulinsolence.com/2018/07/06/belated-july-4-antivaccine-rant-about-zero-tolerance-vaccine-laws-courtesy-of-barbara-loe-fishe/ …Show this thread -
Two years ago,
@delbigtree was giving speeches while promoting@vaxxedthemovie with @teamvaxxed to groups like@MIVaxFreedomPAC and@MI4VaxChoice in which he invoked the American Revolution and talked about dying for vaccine freedom. 8/https://respectfulinsolence.com/2016/10/28/nobody-promotes-antivaccine-nonsense-in-my-statewithout-receiving-some-insolence-2016-election-edition/ …Show this thread -
Indeed,
@TXforVaxChoice explicitly invokes conservative/libertarian themes in its activism against vaccine mandates and its use of antivaccine misinformation and pseudoscience to promote its view. 9/https://respectfulinsolence.com/2017/07/07/vaccine-policy-is-becoming-politicized/ …Show this thread -
To sum up, antivax beliefs are indeed common on the left, but they're just as common on the right, and, RIGHT NOW IN 2018, the loudest, most powerful, most dangerous antivaccine voices are almost all coming from the right. 10/10

Based on Kahan’s analysis of risk perception there’s little purity in ideological forms of denialism. The extremes of both ends of the spectra will often find a way to land on the same page. Remember Alexander Cockburn falling for AGW denial? https://www.monbiot.com/2007/06/12/the-conspiracy-widens/ …
