Holy hell. There are still quacks who do chelation therapy for autism, even though it can kill? I'd hoped that that particular quackery had been so thoroughly discredited that even naturopaths wouldn't use it any more. Sadly, no quackery, no matter how ridiculous, ever goes away.https://twitter.com/A4AOntario/status/1019688625754140672 …

Ontario's governing board for physicians received a complaint about an anti-vax MD who performs chelation on autistic toddlers. The MD, who serves on @cpso_ca committees, claims removing heavy metals treats autism. CPSO closed investigation without consulting any experts [thread

I have had friends point to articles suggesting that chelation therapy would with Parkinson's. I said no thanks-the treadmill works fine

Good quackery never really dies, it just becomes more or less fashionable.

Thread. 🤪😧😠 The public medical regulator has a responsibility to ensure patients receive quality evidence-based care. Protecting the public from quackery is their raison d'être. This is absurd. @CaulfieldTim @DrJenGunter @SLSingh @bengoldacre @DocBastard https://twitter.com/A4AOntario/status/1019688625754140672 …

As long as we keep saying that autism is so bad that all risks are acceptable, this won’t stop.

We also need to stop portraying it as normal and acceptable behavior to treat your child like a guinea pig. Media reports tend to do that even when acknowledging the dangers of treatment. If autistic lives were valued as much as NT lives, there'd be more child abuse cases filed.

To be clear: Any emotions parents feel after receiving a diagnosis are valid. That is in no way incompatible with saying that getting your child's backbone karate chopped in order to cure autism is child abuse.
