Look, I'm sorry but this discussion has taken most of my evening and got nowhere. I'd recommend a good textbook on statistics might help you

I have taken formal courses in probability theory and statistics. I admit that I misspoke when I said a distribution is needed. What is however needed is the hypothesis. And we cannot make any statement about the truth of the hypothesis, only its falsity.

That's precisely what I've been saying since my first (2014) paper on the topic. If you find the papers hard to follow, you might find this talk easier https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFaIpe9rFR0 … Now goodnight

"It relies on the assumption that the theory is true". What?!! That shows such a basic misunderstanding of statistical inference, that I doubt whether it's worth continuing this discussion.

Your method still relies on the p-value or similar metric, which is calculated using the null hypothesis. That calculation has no meaning without the assumption that the null hypothesis is true, and therefore no meaning without assuming the theory which generated it is true.

I'm sorry, but there is really no point in carrying on until you read enough to understand the statistical arguments better. You've occupied my entire evening. It's now 10 pm and I'm going to watch the news. Good night

That was your choice, as you continue to reply. I have read plenty on the topic. And you are now moving from a discussion of the topic to a veiled personal attack. Now, you contradicted your earlier statement. You recognize that your calculations rely on the assumption of truth

And there you are, back to substituting insults where argument should go. A hypothesis is meaningless without a theory, and a p-value is meaningless without a hypothesis. We generate p-values and related statistics from the assumption that our theory is true, which is why

Certainly a good lesson in Dunning-Kruger.I never meant such certainty combined with so little understanding (except among quacks, obviously)
