After having recently watched @dunkirkmovie and @DarkestHour on demand, I stand in awe at how England actually survived such a seemingly hopeless situation and ultimately triumphed. I can't imagine such a dark time.

My Petersburger friends of a certain age had a very hard time talking about the siege of Leningrad; I didn't know anybody who lived through it, but I knew people who *knew* people who did, and said that they forever avoided certain places where bodies had been piled.
