Grant - that's a bit unfair. The SGU makes itself completely available to all attendees. We hang out, chat with guests, go to the events, and are completely approachable. Like all conferences, people can pay for extra events that take extra work.

Don't get me wrong. I love the SGU and everyone associated with you! And I know everyone is approachable during the conferences. You guys are great, and I'm sorry I singled you out. However, I do have a problem with the "Class System" that is inherent in American Skepticism.

I still disagree. There is nothing different about skepticism than any other social group. And there is no "class" system - people who's work has value tend to get recognized. Yes, there are self-promoters, like everywhere.

I have witnessed skeptics protect sexual predation like it's going out of style (wish it was). This is an indelible stain on the community and is continuously overlooked. Not to mention how many males just get into the community just to troll for strange.

Why would a man be more inclined to troll for strange among skeptics per se? Is that not a fairly universal male tendency? Is there something about skeptical women that makes them more amenable to predation?

"Would you like to go up to my room for a drink, then?" "I'm not sure about the epistemological foundations of your offer..." "Well, Foucault might say...." "OK, never mind, just do me."

Also, some of the worst predators were celebrity superstars in the skeptic movement. Female fans, especially those unaware of their history, could be very very flattered when these skeptic celebs paid attention to them or wanted to have a drink with them.

These women are always afraid to come out against such a well respected member of the skeptic community and that's precisely why they're preyed upon. 2/2

Yes, there was also that. I started to appreciate the problem around 2010, when a female friend told me about how more experienced female TAM goers would try to protect female newbie TAM goers by warning them about the predators & trying to prevent them from being alone w/them.
