You posit a false dilemma. Also, pediatric oncology is a bad example. Children with cancer are enrolled in clinical trials at a much higher rate than adults, the highest of any group. That's why survival of childhood cancer has increased from <10% to nearly 80% since the 1960s.

Pretty much all academic docs like myself are all for access to promising experimental therapeutics. Done poorly (as in

The point is, the vast majority of experimental drugs will be unlikely to help such patients, but they will be likely to cause harm. That's why we do clinical trials before approving drugs.
