  3. There are a whopping 109 reptile species that have been recorded in Virunga! This beautiful guy is one of them. He’s a blue-headed tree agama. Males have bright blue or turquoise heads as pictured here while females are darker brown in color.

  4. We are sad to announce the passing of one of our courageous bloodhounds, Sabrina. She was the matriarch & top tracking dog of the Congohounds unit. She was 10yr old. We’re so grateful for her work and dedication to protect the park, its wildlife & communities.

  6. We’re so excited to announce Virunga’s first mountain gorilla birth of 2020. Sub-adult female Seminane has given birth to her first offspring, a baby girl. 8 yr old Seminane is part of the Munyanga group & this new birth marks her passage from sub-adult female to adult female.

    In an intensive conservation programme for the mountain gorilla has raised their numbers above 1,000 for the first time since records began.

  13. Ecotourism is a key pillar of the Virunga Alliance, the park’s initiative to enable stability through sustainable development. The park has welcomed over 25,000 visitors since it reopened tourism in 2014 with over 500 jobs created as a result

  14. Gestation time for gorillas is similar to humans at around 8.5 months. Newborn gorilla babies weigh between 4lb-5lbs at birth & are fully weaned from their mothers at 4 yrs. They then start partaking in the same diet as adults-leaves, roots, & their favorite: young bamboo shoots!

  15. The genus Gorilla is divided into two species, western & eastern, with both groups having two subspecies each. Both subspecies of the eastern gorilla are found in VNP, making it one of the only parks in Africa where 2 gorilla subspecies occur.

  17. It’s baby season at Virunga! A previously unknown adult female in Bageni group has given birth to a baby girl. The rangers gave the adult female the name Shukuru meaning “we welcome you & thank you for bringing new life.” As for the new baby girl? She’s called Zawadi or “gift.”

  18. Recent sighting: Giant forest hog (Hylochoerus meinertzhageni) The Giant forest hog is a rarely seen animal. Virunga is home to several groups and is one of the few places in Africa where tourists can get an up close view of these mysterious creatures.

  20. 🦍🇨🇩✨Update: We recently shared the wonderful news that female mountain gorilla, Jicho, had given birth. We are now excited to confirm that it’s a boy! Rangers report that both mom and baby are continuing to do well.
