better search was neat in the short term and has proven to be helpful countless times over the years. i know not all Gmail users do this but i have always hit the Archive button for mail i'm done with but want to keep around anyway — just can't bring myself to hit delete! 2/14

that's because, blissfully, i don't have to. some of us remember the days when you'd have to vigilantly delete messages so as not to run up against your storage limit. it always felt annoying. Google knew that. 3/14pic.twitter.com/W35O6CATn8

the thing about Archive is stuff you put in there still counts against your storage limit even though it's cleared out of your inbox. i've never hit the limit. heck, i let a lot of stuff rack up in my inbox too. because yo, you didn't need to worry about storage anymore! 4/14

Google raised the limit to 2GB in 2005. in 2007 the limit was around 2.8GB. in 2011: 7.5GB. in 2012: 10GB. 2013: 15GB. 'we do spend a lot of time working to make sure our users have all the space they need,' as Gmail engineer Rob Siemborski put it in a 2007 blog post 5/14

Google has been vigorous in building data centers with many, many hard drives for more than a decade now. more than a billion people use Gmail every month. 1B users x 15GB minimum storage equals, um, 15 exabytes? this excludes storage for Google search, YouTube etc. 6/14

years ago i got 100GB of extra storage when i bought a Chromebook. it seemed like a needless promotion. but after i enabled it, i noticed the meter in Google Drive changed. it looked like no matter what i'd do for the rest of my life i'd never hit that 100+GB limit 7/14

on Saturday something surprising happened. i got an automated email from Google Drive that said my storage promotion is about to end. 'Not ready to upgrade? You can free up space by deleting files in Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos,' they say. 8/14pic.twitter.com/Nubycx7NCf
