  4. What's the most ironic thing a group called the "Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms" could do? Did you say hiring a private investigator to surveil the judge ruling on one of its court challenges?

After a closed-door case management meeting with the lawyers representing seven Manitoba churches challenging the province’s public health orders, Joyal stated John Carpary, president of the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms, was involved in the hiring of the private investigator.

“The organization that Mr. Carpay represents hired the private investigator to conduct a surveillance of me as a so-called ‘public figure,’ Joyal said.

Carpay said the public has a right to know whether or not government officials are following public health orders, adding this has been done to survey a number of public officials. He said the investigative work is for observation only.

“I was disappointed and dismayed to hear that somebody was knocking on a door and asking for someone,” Carpay said. “This is contrary to our instructions.”

A Toronto news satirical comedy featuring a roast of Doug Ford, wild puppets, animated adventures, a look into the Fringe itself, and hopefully some jokes too. It's late night comedy with dash of chaos.

    Star gets action

A January 2 Facebook post from the Toronto Star: "Canada’s sports betting revolution is finally approaching, and catching up to speed with much of the rest of the world. The way Canadian sports fans can bet on their teams will change. Here's what you need to know:"

There's a link to an article that carries the headline "Canada’s sports betting revolution is finally approaching. Here's what you need to know"
A screenshot from the Ontario government's lobbyist registry.

Under the heading "Lobbying Activity," there's a question that asks: "Describe your lobbying goal(s) in detail. What are you attempting to influence or accomplish as a result of your communications with Ontario public office holders?"

The response:

Ontario's 2019-20 budget contained a promise to license private operators to operate in a regulated online gaming market in the province. In the latest Ontario budget, the province said it would be "introducing legislation to give the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) authority to conduct and manage iGaming, in addition to having the role of the regulator." The AGCO would "manage the relationship between the government and private iGaming operators." The legislation has been enacted and is awaiting proclamation. Torstar wishes to participate in the regulated gaming market.
A screenshot from a Torstar press release dated this evening, put out via CNW.

Headline: "Torstar Corporation Welcomes Single-Event Sports Wagering to Canada"

Subhead: "Plans to include sports wagering as part of its Ontario-based internet gaming business"

First paragraph: "TORONTO, July 6, 2021 /CNW/ - Torstar Corporation today applauded the Government of Ontario's announcement of iGaming Ontario, a new subsidiary of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO)."

Quite TIFF-like, the show's entire run has sold out before tickets could go on sale for even low-level (<$1,100) donors, let alone the general public:

On the one hand, I can't decide what my favourite part is: On the other hand, it's probably the casual inclusion of this:

Screencap of YouTube, showing a July 2 video from the Toronto Sun titled "SAL SWAN SONG: After 31-years, Sue-Ann moves on to the next chapter"

The video is paused on a frame showing a faux-wanted poster attached to a utility pole, with Sue-Ann Levy's face and the words "SUE-ANN LEVY – BIGOT"

Regrettably, this story is not nearly the wacky situation that the headline/photo combination suggests:

A screenshot from YouTube with a CBC News video titled “Female police officer finds out her psychologist was not who he said he was.”

The video thumbnail shows a concerned-looking woman, with the back of a dog’s head in the foreground, as though she has been consulting with it.

"We know what happens with the NDP or Liberals form governments."

The top of a fundraising email from the Ontario PCs, with an "ONTARIO PC: FOR THE PEOPLE" banner across the top. The text:

Jonathan, you may not have caught it...

On the front page of the Toronto Star, Andrea Horwath and Steven Del Duca declared they would never cooperate with a PC government.

Ontario's left has one goal in 2022 - total power.

We know what happens with the NDP or Liberals form governments.

Higher taxes, fewer jobs, political corruption and endless scandal.

Sue-Ann Levy bids farewell to the Sun: "I tried to be…factual"

Newspaper excerpt, with text above a smiling photo of Levy wearing a bike helmet:

…as much as I touched theirs.

Throughout my career — building on the journalistic principles I was taught at Carleton University — I tried to be a straight shooter, factual, often tough but fair. I felt I couldn’t do a story properly unless I went out to the scene and talked to people as human beings, which one too many times found me in bed-bug-and cockroach-infested social…

He could not have been less subtle:

    BLB Are you brainwashing them?

GM Yeah. I think objective journalism is boring. I want to be subjective. I have my own agenda, and I'm determined to ram it down people's throats. I want people to care about immigration, I want people to care about the environment and over-population, I want people to care about vegetarianism and animal rights, I don't want our readership to smoke cigarettes, I want our readership to do drugs but not too many, I want them to be open-minded, I want there to be equal power between the sexes. I have tons of agendas.

BLB You want them to be like you, essentially.

GM Yeah, but better.

BLB I feel so much better about your position now because I was afraid you were hiding behind this cloak of irony or sarcasm, but actually you don't have an ironic bone in your body. You are in fact sexist, racist, misogynist ...

GM (Laughs.)

Wow, I'd never seen this 2002 interview with Gavin McInnes, six years before he left Vice:

BLB Do you play the race card in Vice?

GM Listen, I'm proud to be white. When I was punk rock and for open borders as a teenager, we were all about supporting other cultures and making fun of white people for being so corny and playing golf and listening to country music. So I think there's a lot of bad things you can say about the white race, but it's got to the point now where white pride isn't as taboo as it used to be. We're going to be a minority in fifty years.

…

BLB How are you going to do that without creating a climate of intolerance?

GM You need a climate of intolerance -- so you close the borders, like Quebec is doing. We're always so outraged as Canadians about Quebec being so strict about its language laws, but that's the only way you can retain culture -- to be revolutionary about it. We inter viewed Raymond Villeneuve in Vice, and he said the only thing he regrets about the FLQ and going to jail is that he didn't kill more English.
GM I do tend to write too much of it myself, but my own personal political agenda is way more right-wing than Vice's.

BLB Do you have clashes with the other editors?

GM Well Suroosh walks around with a big gold jihad ring and a big beard and we've had about seven different articles against immigration.

BLB He's Pakistani, and a Muslim. You're not anti-Muslim, are you?

GM No, but I think we have to be a lot less tolerant of immigrant Muslims. Shane, on the other hand, wants it to be easier to sell, so he doesn't want me to have the Anal Sex Guide or the race issue with your photos of Nazi skinheads. He doesn't like that, so we lock horns. So to answer your question, I definitely sneak my own agenda in there. Like the "Hooray for Hate" article, which at first glance is about the merits of hate in science and art, but really what I'm saying is America needs to stop immigration and be intolerant of illegal immigrants.
