The thing is ... I love this site. It's the most favorite thing I've ever worked on. I wrote this almost the same week I started working on Twitter (then Obvious 1.0). Despite everything I still believe it. And I still believe no matter what the dream won't die here.

We've been sleeping. We've had each other, and Twitter, our work, our days. We had each other, and they left us alone. We took their features, and ignored them, we kept their feeds churning, and the moment they pulled away, we forgot them.

Suffice it to say Twitter’s current leadership is adjusting a dial marked “overt Nazis” and checking to see how the crowd reacts.

"have fun staying poor" was the rallying cry for six incredible months, what happened?

People rooting for crypto to be shut down are incredibly cringe. Like no one is trying to shut down the dumb fiat system you use, no one is forcing you to buy crypto, no one is forcing you to read crypto news or follow crypto twitter. Let people do what they want and chill…

The degree to with which people have talked themselves into the “certainty” of a recession has an awful lot of parallels to the way there was certainty about the inevitable Red Wave

Q4 real GDP growth 2.9%, initial jobless claims 186k. Really not sure why anyone thinks the economy is weak or even slowing.

Why write about this—seemingly so far from my interests? Harry and Meghan? Because it's not. Corrupt media ecology is THE topic of the day. Murdoch also owns Fox News. And because too many are dismissing The Spare as mere oversharing based on a few irrelevant details. It's not.

A reminder for reporters working on this story: Facebook has allowed Trump to buy millions of dollars worth of ads *since* he was de-platformed in 2021 - including ads saying the election was rigged.

However, let's not forget that @Meta has allowed Donald Trump to continue to advertise despite his "ban" on the platform. His team has spent millions of dollars on ads since January 2021: twitter.com/FWIWnews/statu

Now that Twitter is censoring users on behalf of the Modi government in India, I'm reupping this October prediction that Musk's international entanglements would be the Achilles heel of Twitter. Twitter should release all communications with governments regarding censorship.

I think @elonmusk has made a huge mistake, making himself the global face of content moderation at a critical moment of struggle with governments, while maintaining massive personal exposure to challenging countries.

A classic in the genre I have called the savvy style. The truth is "the two cases are markedly different." But truth is not what matters, Baker tells us. Perception matters. And its manipulation by bad actors like Trump. The savvy know of this. The clingers to truth are hapless.

One of the most significant costs to Biden of the documents case is the opportunity cost: Democrats will now have a hard time using Trump's mishandling of classified papers against him, even though the particulars of the two cases are markedly different. nytimes.com/2023/01/24/us/

Let me suggest that the cultural footprint of the Avatar movies are that tens of millions of people go to the theatre to see them, enjoy the movies, and feel warmly about them. That's a good cultural footprint.

Replying to @JohnDiLillo
The AVATAR films have certainly made a ton of money & sold a bunch of tickets. There’s no conspiracy here. But the franchise still has seemingly zero cultural footprint or adjacent conversation. It’s a remarkable anomaly.

Youtube and "free-speech absolutist" cave to the Indian government's demand that they remove links to a documentary critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. What else is censoring for Modi's government?

At the risk of being a heretic: It’s useful having some speech that actually *is* illegal. Especially when there are courts to provide careful constitutional review.

This is a good example for when people like to praise Elon with "well, you have to admit he's moving fast." Yah, he fucked up the UX of a previously launched feature and is now slowly reverting it back to how it used to work.
