Consistent with what I’ve seen in the ER in LA in the last week. No one is testing positive for Covid or flu and certainly no patients being admitted for severe Covid. Definitely the easiest of the 3 pandemic winters for us so far.

I've covered three pandemic winters now, and hospitals are raising far fewer alarms about this one. There was no massive post-holidays surge in admissions. Covid is declining. No more "tripledemic" threat because flu, RSV & covid peaked early Dec washingtonpost.com/health/2023/01

Tracking virus spread by ER visits is a fantastic and accurate metric. ⁣ Two clear trends:⁣ - RSV, flu, and Covid have already peaked this Winter⁣ - The “scariest variant yet” XBB.1.5 hasn’t taken off given high level of vaccine/infection-induced population immunity

HOLIDAY GATHERINGS: Press quick to blame human behavior instead of highly transmissible respiratory viruses, seasonality. Please know immunity has increased massively from 2020 to 2023 against COVID. We see respiratory pathogens every winter; we have tools; will always fight them

18% of the kidney transplants in America come from Orthodox Jews, 0.2% of the population. When you hear about “insularity” and “indifference to outsiders” please remember that. Taking mitzvot seriously often leads - astonishingly- to mitzvot! (And yes, I’m a Conservative Rabbi…)

Renewal in 2022… * Facilitated over 90 life-saving transplants. * Broke the 900 mark for total transplants facilitated since Renewal was founded. * At one point we did 18 transplants in 21 days! Most probably a world record. #savinglives

RESPIRATORY VIRAL SEASON: This is what every winter looks like for us in ID. Going forward, older people will likely be boosted every year for COVID (>65 certainly; let's see what decides); we will encourage flu shots >6 months; & RSV vaccine coming for vulnerable

Update from the ER in LA Over the weekend, I saw about 40 patients. - 0 RSV - 0 Flu - 1 elderly patient tested + for covid. Covid likely caused an acute exacerbation of her chronic atrial fibrillation and she required hospitalization. Let's break this case down. Thread 1/4

Cellular immunity (high population immunity from the vaccine, natural infection or hybrid immunity) why hospitalizations not rising MA (& why hospitalizations so linked to vaccine rates with delta & BA1; now high immunity from natural/hybrid too)

Here is my attempt to unpack #COVID19 data from Massachusetts to gain some insight into the impact of the XBB.1.5 variant. The chart below combines the results of variant surveillance (data for New England), as well as cases and hospitalizations trends. 🧵 (1/10)

Worried about the new XBB 1.5 variant? Before you panic, look at COVID rates in New England (75% XBB 1.5) - versus the Chicago area (6% XBB 1.5). See the big wave of cases in New England? I don't either. Just because we have a new variant doesn't mean a new surge is coming.

Pandemic phase "over" when enough of population has gained immunity (most egregious misinformation on this platform/media was that COVID could be eradicated/eliminated; pathogen doesn't have features of this); this virologist also credits less virulence.

I’ve gotten dozens of asks for my view on the meltdown and here it goes. (This post is a good start but I don’t pretend that this is exhaustive) 1/

A Reddit post explains the Southwest Airlines meltdown (it cancelled >2.5k flights today). TLDR: Crew scheduling system is 20 years outdated. In event of disruption, can only be changed via phone and manually updated (no app/internet options). And generally understaffed.

Southwest finally, formally acknowledges that the vast majority of the cancelled flights are its fault and will fully refund, as well as cover incidental expenses. This doesn't necessarily make passengers whole, but it is a good start.
Quote Tweet
Also @SouthwestAir is deeming cancellations since 12/24 as controllable, meaning reimbursement for incidental expenses. And refunds for cancellations since 12/24 will include full fare and any other unused charges

IMPORTANT REMINDER: Please be kind to airline agents. At the end of the day, Southwest as a whole is who canceled my flight with no explanation. I watched multiple agents today in tears after how customers treated them. They are here to help, and I’m so grateful to them.
