is this true? do CEOs actually make decisions based on standalone product strategy docs? where in the growth curve is the company? perhaps if the company is still searching for product market fit, BUT surely not if they have P/M fit and have a productive sales force.

There are tons of standalone product strategy docs written at every company. I should probably have argued for the CEO to mandate that these docs never be written in the first place.

+1, though IMO the opportunity is to have a clearly defined and alligned definition of "product". In SV, many PM are only scoped to own eng/UI. This works for some, but I would argue most businesses require PMs to have a GM mindset/scope when evaluating strategy & opportunities.

That’s because SV companies try to have separate roles for product people and business people. Imo, that only works if your product goal can be mostly separated from your business goal (e.g., increase engagement from users so you can later sell ads).

The best way to solve the GTM issue I’ve seen is to require a launch PR or blogpost to be written and attach as appendix to doc. Amazon of course famously makes that the first thing you read.
