I'm seeing a major drop in results with review stars showing in the SERPs. This is for one major retailer client but seeing it across multiple accounts. Is this a one-day glitch ?

Hey , we're seeing Google crawl a lot of /feed/ URLs. Is this article from 2009 that says we should allow it still accurate?

For those that do SEO reporting, this is your reminder that March 2020 was the first month of the pandemic. Your year over year comparisons may be very skewed.

Wrapping up this thread, I think it will be very interesting to see if more publishers adopt this structured data type and if Google takes any other steps to make the search engine more real-time.

So how do you fix this issue? Create a structured data type that signals you're updating content in real-time and incentivize the behavior by giving this content preference in the search engines.

Even with elements such as Top Stories and Google News, this still might not provide the up to date information users need. You need a system that can keep up with the ever-changing events.

The way Google is structured isn't conducive to getting real-time information. By the time it crawls, indexes and ranks the best content, it's generally too late. Twitter doesn't have this issue.

I think this schema type is a very telling sign of where Google wants to go. I think one of the biggest weaknesses of a search engine is that it isn't real-time. Users might jump to Twitter instead of Google to get live updates for what's happening in the world.

This schema type presents a major opportunity for publishers. In our tests, we've seen that using this structured data type can improve Top Stories visibility for major events. Tests showed using this structured data type improved YoY query visibility between 200%-600%

However, not just anyone can use this schema type. You need to be whitelisted for it. There's actually still a form where you can request inclusion:

So what is this structured data type? Each time an article is updated, a new "liveBlogUpdate" property is created in the structured data. This update is associated with a timestamp, headline and description of the update.

Here's a screenshot of the Top Stories carousel today for "coronavirus". Notice that two of the three results in the carousel use the LiveBlogPosting structured data type.

Need an example? Here's a screenshot of the Top Stories carousel from election night. Notice how many of the results have the red "Live" tag in the top right hand corner. This indicates that they're using LiveBlogPosting structured data.

We see that publications such as CNN and The Washington Post use this schema type to gain traction in the Top Stories results. Google appears to favor articles with this structured data type and give them preferential treatment in the Top Stories carousel.

Here's a great way to improve your site's in Top Stories. If you switch Chrome to mobile, you can often see the topic that Google has chosen to associate with the Top Stories results. You can then create new content and optimize around the topic that Google has chosen.
