Note that both before and after WW2 there have been large scale migration movements in Europe: milions of Germans were resettled from current territory of Poland and Czechia to the west, they also left Romania in 80/90s, Stalin moved entire nations within the ussr borders etc

In that sense some of the geographical barriers maybe just a reflection of fairly recent enforced or voluntary migrations after the collapse of Habsburg empire, Third Reich or Soviet Union as well as the very existence of some empires in fairly recent past PRoCH/USSR
