        While I’m a big federalism proponent, I think one thing we’re seeing is that the breakdown is between urban/rural and not state level. So eastern Washington has more in common with Idaho and Seattle more in common with San Francisco. Not clear how to resolve that.

        2. …a strong sense of place and localism. Although I doubt most would want a Mormon styled synthesis between cosmopolitanism and place. (Utah as where so many do volunteer work overseas, speak multiple languages, yet are anchored to a place)

        That seems less a synthesis than a kind of mutual tolerance. Which of course is fine when it’s actually achievable. I think the conflict comes when values of the two groups conflict. 2cd amendment rights being the obvious example but there are many others.

        I’d argue one reason for Utah taking the form it does is that most of the population is in suburban communities - neither really rural nor urban but a blend. Suspect that plays out in other areas too. (I’d argue Arizona fits into that somewhat too)
