Ah, missed it. My mistake. His book on Roman slavery in late antiquity is also a wonderful look at Roman society, just a recommendation. Good list though.

You can actually glean many of those things, save archaeology, from primary sources. It's not "fine for narratives". Wasn't Herodotus's History a comparative work, looking at the history of barbarian nations?

As for Carthage and the Punic Wars, a particular interest of mine, CARTHAGE MUST BE DESTROYED by Miles is the best. It’s a fun read too.
