In a new Cognition paper, Barbara Pavlek, & I try to "reverse-engineer" cash. The design of coins is adapted to our cognitive biases. Knowing them, we can uncover hidden patterns in coined currencies. Thread (1/10).

📣 Out now! Playful iconicity: Structural markedness underlies the relation between funniness and iconicity w/ A theory-driven investigation of 70,000 words to find out why words like waddle, flop, and zigzag sound funny *and* feel iconic

Does anyone know if there are word embedding algorithms that do smarter negative sampling? E.g., encountering "green" means you didn't encounter other colors words; dog is more of a not-cat than not-zebra, etc. ?

I have a new paper out today! Co-led with Alex Pigot and co-authored with an AMAZING team of fantastic ornithologists, we look at morphological measurements from ~10,000 species of birds and link form to trophic level, diet, and foraging.

We also try to diagnose why cognitive and developmental science has been so divided on the idea that experience with language is critically important to shaping the mind. 2/2

Excellent work, as usual! could the ability of these kids to learn the language with so little directed input have something to do with the structure of Tzeltal? Or do you think any language is equally learnable with this amt of Child Directed Speech?

Great topic for CurrentDir in Psych! I am fortunate to have had Barb Finlay in my undergrad days as an antidote to the - yes, still widespread! - triune brain theory.

Excellent work by my student Categories with easier to name features are (much, much!) easier to learn. We control the hell out of it. It really is about nameability.
