And those are just the cases that make it public. Polled Profs say their speech is chilled, student say their speech is chilled. And this is that institutions that are extremely politically homogenous anyway. The fact they can even find that many targets anymore is astounding.

It’s the utter incuriosity & confidence of people who would like to wish the
#FreeSpeech problem on campus away that stuns me. I sent this critic examples of people being silenced both by the right & the left, but he didn’t even bother to read them before dismissing them.Näytä tämä ketju

But there are 1.5 million college faculty in the US. 27 professors fired = .000018%. And were they all fired for speech reasons? And what does "targeted for punishment" mean exactly? Does that mean some students complained? If that's what it means, so what?

Yes, 27 Professors being fired for being Professors is a big deal.

This is fairly unintelligible. I guess that Stanford education is overrated. First, aren't there something like 135k professors in the US? So <0.1% of all professors. And do the 27, 12, 20, and 65% data points relate to 2020 or since 2015? And how is top 100 defined?

A lot of the fear comes from seeing administrators' own fear. Every day, every lecture, you think is going to be your last, because you said something that someone didn't like, and you know admin will not have your back.

What Matt may not realize is that the variable punishment of just a few prominent thought criminals is enough to result in mass self-censorship. I think you and others have discussed this before, and the data from surveys of profs confirms it. This 0.2% thing is gaslighting.

Jonah Goldberg covers this in his book Liberal Fascism. Conservatives had their issues for sure in academia, but the control of our institutions of what is known as liberalism today is, unfortunately, driving the divisive nature of this time.

McCarthy's Hollywood blacklist was just a few hundred people. And it passed, eventually, as the "overly emotional" "stressed" members of the House Committee on Unamerican Activities calmed down a bit. So that too was nothing really to worry about, right?
