The best defense I've heard otherwise is that a Daily Beast article vaguely hints there could be more to the story; however, this is still the NYT's explicit logic, is the guy's apology, and you'd be relying on withholding of info from DB reporters who seemed to want to nail him

I saw a lot of this coming up on campus, but people would say “look, they’ll get over it fast as soon as I get the ‘real world’.” Nope, the world was going to look a lot more like campus & not in a good way.
