The best defense I've heard otherwise is that a Daily Beast article vaguely hints there could be more to the story; however, this is still the NYT's explicit logic, is the guy's apology, and you'd be relying on withholding of info from DB reporters who seemed to want to nail him

I saw a lot of this coming up on campus, but people would say “look, they’ll get over it fast as soon as I get the ‘real world’.” Nope, the world was going to look a lot more like campus & not in a good way.

Conor is always good at making things clear, so I post his summary here. If there were something that made his ouster make sense, I'm sure we would have heard. Instead, it seems the Times has caved yet again to an outrage mob. (& then there's Andy Mills.)https://twitter.com/conor64/status/1357834279498047488?s=20 …

So his intent was to help a student on a study abroad trip and he's getting fired from his job two years later because he, at 65, mistakenly thought the taboo was uttering the word as a slur--as it was for much of his life--rather than uttering it at all? https://twitter.com/ErikWemple/status/1357807684674871297 …
