I'm fascinated by my local Japanese tailor.
Them: It'll take 10 days.
Me: Well, I'll be on vacation so I'll need to come in 12 days.
Them: Do you need these for your vacation?
Me: Well, if it can't be done, I understand.
Them: For $4 more, it'll be done in 2 hours.

I don't think I have ADHD but I keep seeing posts like these, and I really do start to wonder.
I'm suspicious as well, but remember HR is there to protect the company, not the workers. If a bunch of heads decided it was what was best for the company, HR was gonna be called in to mediate if at the very least for company politics.
I learned a lot of cooking technique from restaurant-style recipes, and over time the amount of butter I've had to learn to scale back on including is... gastronomical.

I've written some reviews for poetry and short stories, though never at the level/full-time as you do. I would've been stoked that you said you'd even consider squeezing it into your schedule. How could he not expect such vile comments to backfire?
Popped the case off my phone & found ¥10,000 stuffed in it. I have no memory whatsoever of why or what this stems from.

I have a joke about translating Japanese video game dialogue, but... I...

I love Japan & my friends here, but whether or not to stay seems to be a daily topic of consideration—not that Japan is entirely at fault. Coming up on 13 years...

That's next level! Although, a number of my Japanese friends have almost never heard me speak English, so when I speak English, I occasionally get English jyouzu'd.
One of my favorite things in Japan is being able to but volumes of manga for so cheap. ¥110 per is hard to beat.
Perhaps, I've simply grown accustomed to staying in cheap business hotels when traveling, but I'd have little objection to a room like this, unless it stank of old cigarettes.

Definitely not staying here with the wife.
(I appreciate the upgrade and all but this is pretty shocking for the brand in Japan)
Saw a Fox News clip of some old guy complaining about how we'll all be enjoying plant-based beer on the 4th of July, and all I can think is... all beer is plant-based.
I work on over 100,000 lines of dialogue a year as a given, & I've never made an onigiri into a jelly donut. Neither I nor the people whose content I help bring to an English-speaking audience feel we should be paid less because of something someone remembers from the late '90s.

Is people who don't speak Japanese telling translators they have bad Japanese something new or had I just the good fortune not to come across it until now?

Yeah, that seems apparent. The part I found remarkable is that it was only $4 to jump the queue.
The only vehicles that should be permitted to make announcements from a megaphone should be those that sell food. If candidates want to announce their campaign while vendoring yakitori or baked sweet potatoes, that would be okay.

Is this why rich people keep saying if we just stopped eating avocado toast we could afford houses? Is their avocado toast like $60 per serving? Can't say I've never paid that much for a good steak, but not as a go-to lunch option.
Very telling when even Japanese people find it downright ridiculous.

Meeting tomorrow to discuss a book translation. This is a nonfiction memoir type deal. It's published in Japan, but the memoirist (who I'm meeting) has family who don't speak Japanese & he wants to share his story with them (and potentially publish overseas). Wish me luck!
Sure. I didn't say they didn't. And I said I also am suspicious of that exact same thing. My only point was HR isn't reliable as a source of "everyone" being against him.
We've reached the point where saying the translator changed a text has been claimed on a text that doesn't have a Japanese version because the translator worked with the Japanese writer to produce the final as a team--with no extant Japanese version. #translation #critics

The best of friends fight sometimes, so it can happen in marriage, too. Characterizing it all as it has to be one way or the other is misleading, I think. The aftermath of how it is addressed seems more important to me.
