I'm fascinated by my local Japanese tailor. Them: It'll take 10 days. Me: Well, I'll be on vacation so I'll need to come in 12 days. Them: Do you need these for your vacation? Me: Well, if it can't be done, I understand. Them: For $4 more, it'll be done in 2 hours.

I've written some reviews for poetry and short stories, though never at the level/full-time as you do. I would've been stoked that you said you'd even consider squeezing it into your schedule. How could he not expect such vile comments to backfire?

Random #Japanese/#English tidbit: the color "peach" in English refers to the fruit, but in Japanese refers to the flowers. In English we mean a light orange, but Japanese means, as you may know, pink. 肌色/はだいろ or "flesh tone" is closer to what we usually mean in English.

In the next 2 months, I will be moving to Tokyo. I am now accepting any and all advice with regards to where to live and what to take into consideration when selecting an apartment. I'm just beginning to really learn Tokyo geography, so by all means...

Perhaps, I've simply grown accustomed to staying in cheap business hotels when traveling, but I'd have little objection to a room like this, unless it stank of old cigarettes.

Crowne Plaza Narita really needs a refurbish 😬 Definitely not staying here with the wife. (I appreciate the upgrade and all but this is pretty shocking for the brand in Japan)

I work on over 100,000 lines of dialogue a year as a given, & I've never made an onigiri into a jelly donut. Neither I nor the people whose content I help bring to an English-speaking audience feel we should be paid less because of something someone remembers from the late '90s.

The only vehicles that should be permitted to make announcements from a megaphone should be those that sell food. If candidates want to announce their campaign while vendoring yakitori or baked sweet potatoes, that would be okay.

Is this why rich people keep saying if we just stopped eating avocado toast we could afford houses? Is their avocado toast like $60 per serving? Can't say I've never paid that much for a good steak, but not as a go-to lunch option.

I've taught #ESL in some capacity for the last 12 years of my life, even after I stopped needing the money years ago. Today, I taught my last cram school class and am hanging it up. I'll probably still do the occasional thing at the local international center, but that's a wrap!

Meeting tomorrow to discuss a book translation. This is a nonfiction memoir type deal. It's published in Japan, but the memoirist (who I'm meeting) has family who don't speak Japanese & he wants to share his story with them (and potentially publish overseas). Wish me luck!

We've reached the point where saying the translator changed a text has been claimed on a text that doesn't have a Japanese version because the translator worked with the Japanese writer to produce the final as a team--with no extant Japanese version. #translation #critics

Not gonna name names, but my favorite review for DEMON DAYS says there are some "noticeable differences" between "Momoko’s original and translations by Davisson." Bitch please. You have NOT seen the original. No one has except for me and the editors. Why you trying to pretend?

Maybe it's because I work tangentially adjacent to the industry or I'm just getting older/worrying about different things, but while I'm happy to discuss a game's shortcomings and moan a bit, I don't get taking it this far.

Yoshiko, my wife, took a tumble into an irrigation ditch in the countryside late at night, not being able to see. She's a bit banged up, but it's turned into a 3-day hospital stay to make sure she doesn't have an infection. I probably would've gotten gangrene & not gone in.

Japanese immigration held a 33-year old Sri Lankan woman from August to March for OVERSTAYING HER STUDENT VISA. She died after applying several times for provisional release and/or medical care for months and being denied it, despite being obviously ill.

I'd not been to Osaka Castle since ~2017 & for my first 8 years in Japan the museum inside had included little English; however, today I discovered they'd added English to almost everything! I'll certainly recommend 大阪城 more highly to those coming to Japan from now on.

Okay, the serious apartment hunting continues today. Areas to investigate in Tokyo: Mitaka, Kasai, Musashino, Akabane, Musashisakai, Kita/Minami Senju. Also, the Seibu Shinjuku line in general. In a perfect world, Yokohama. Any strong feelings about these places very welcome.
